Aston Villa make Morgan Rogers decision ahead of Jacob Ramsey exit as winger could return

Ramsey is edging closer to a permanent move to Newcastle in a blow to Villa, however his exit could open up a return for Marco Asensio – who impressed at Villa Park last season.

While there is understandable disappointment at Ramsey’s departure, if it can free up room for Asensio and ensure Rogers remains at Villa, it could be a necessary sale.

Aston Villa sources accept huge risk in selling Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey says Ramsey’s expected sale to Newcastle is a difficult one for Aston Villa that carries risk – but there is also an acceptance at Villa that he has ‘reached the end of the road’ at the club.

He said: “it’s a tough situation. They would like to keep him in an ideal world, but for some reason – and this has been going on for a few months now – it’s not quite happening behind the scenes, which is why they’re accepting he’s going to go.

“Villa realise it’s a huge risk letting Ramsey go because they know he’s a potential superstar. They love him as a player, but they just feel that his journey’s come to the end of the road. It’s not really bitter; it just hasn’t quite kicked on like they would hope.”

Newcastle will hope that a change of scene for Ramsey allows him to reach that superstar potential at St James’ Park, while Villa will look to use his exit to strengthen their squad further.

Bailey added: “Eddie Howe has played a massive role in getting Ramsey – I understand that the player was not overly convinced but Howe has talked to him and persuaded him that this is the right move.

“Newcastle see this as a huge coup to get this player, who they think has massive, massive potential.”

Aston Villa interested in re-signing Marco Asensio as Morgan Rogers decision made

If Ramsey completes his move to Newcastle, TBR Football understands that Villa have returned to former loanee Marco Asensio. Links with Leandro Trossard are not understood to be concrete, but there is definite interest in Asensio.

And the Ramsey exit also means Morgan Rogers will remain at Villa Park. Rogers had been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea earlier in the summer.

Bailey said: “Letting Ramsey go does mean that Morgan Rogers stays, because in the background Chelsea are still massively pushing for him. And is that the reason [Xavi] Simons and [Alejandro] Garnacho aren’t done yet? I think that’s played a part.

“Rogers has always been their first choice, he is the one they want, and I think he’ll stay [at Villa]. On the left side, Villa have gone back in for Asensio. I haven’t had any confirmation about Trossard, but I think Asensio is the one they really like. It depends on the deal, and Villa are being canny with it.”
