Aston Villa, Newcastle United fail with approaches to sign Alex Remiro

Aston Villa and Newcastle United have reportedly been interested in signing 30-year-old Spanish international Alex Remiro from Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet COPE, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been keen on signing Alex Remiro. The two Premier League clubs have been scouring the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. So, the 30-year-old Real Sociedad shot-stopper has been a target for the two Premier League clubs.

Aston Villa and Newcastle United recently attempted to lure the Spaniard to move to the Premier League in the summer transfer window. They were even ready to trigger the release clause of €70 million in his contract to ensure they left no stone unturned. However, Remiro has turned them down, as he wants to stay at the Reale Arena.

Alex Remiro and his rise as a dependable shot-stopper

Alex Remiro has established himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in La Liga since joining Real Sociedad from Athletic Club in July 2019. The 30-year-old shot-stopper spent his formative years in Spain and graduated from the youth division at Athletic Club. However, his stock has soared in the last half a dozen years.

The Spanish international has turned out over 250 times thus far for Real Sociedad while keeping 111 clean sheets and conceding 275 goals. Meanwhile, Remiro’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Aston Villa’s interest in Alex Remiro makes sense. The Villans have been scouring the market for a goalkeeper this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Emiliano Martinez’s long-term future. Several candidates, including John Victor, have emerged on the West Midlands club’s radar. However, Remiro has also been a viable target for Aston Villa.

As for Newcastle United, James Trafford was the top goalkeeping target for the Tyneside outfit before Manchester City won the battle for his signature. So, Remiro was a viable alternative amid concerns about Nick Pope’s fitness issues. However, with Newcastle United signing Aaron Ramsdale, the interest in the Spaniard may have ended.

Remiro never wanted to join Aston Villa or Newcastle United either, as he remains committed to Real Sociedad. The two Premier League clubs were also ready to fork out a sum around the value of his release clause of €70 million. So, it will be interesting to see who bolsters Aston Villa’s goalkeeping department, particularly if Emiliano Martinez leaves.
