In a behind-closed-doors friendly at the AXA Training Centre on Sunday, Liverpool delivered a commanding 5-0 victory over Stoke City, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha stealing headlines alongside a Darwin Nunez hat-trick and a Federico Chiesa goal.
The match, a key part of Liverpool’s pre-season preparations, showcased the Reds’ depth and the emergence of their young talent ahead of their Asia tour.
Ngumoha, a highly-rated winger who joined Liverpool from Chelsea’s academy, marked his growing reputation with a first-half goal.
The teenager, starting on the left flank, received possession in the box, cut inside with poise, and unleashed a shot that deflected into the net, looping over Stoke’s goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.
His composed finish extended Liverpool’s lead to 4-0, capping a scintillating opening period. Ngumoha’s electric pace and skillful dribbling, evident in his recent outing against Preston North End, consistently troubled Stoke’s defense, underlining why he’s tipped for a bright future at Anfield.
Darwin Nunez dominated early proceedings, netting a 14-minute hat-trick.
His first came in the sixth minute, instinctively following up after Florian Wirtz’s through ball for Dominik Szoboszlai was half-cleared.
Six minutes later, he finished Szoboszlai’s low cross from a well-worked move. Nunez completed his treble by nudging in a Curtis Jones delivery, showcasing his predatory instincts.
Federico Chiesa sealed the rout in the 88th minute, tapping in after Cody Gakpo unselfishly squared a Jeremie Frimpong cross.
The Reds’ blend of youth and experience, highlighted by Ngumoha’s standout display, signals a promising season ahead.
