Brazilian club had deal in place for Brighton winger – Player backed out at final stage

Jeremy Sarmiento seems to be everywhere this summer. The Brighton winger has been linked with clubs across Europe and South America, and his name keeps popping up in different transfer stories every few days.

Now, a new round of reports from Brazil has revealed that he was close to joining Cruzeiro, only for the deal to collapse at the final stage.

According to local outlet Itatiaia, Cruzeiro had identified the 23-year-old as a key target for the current window, as the club seeks a wide attacker with youth, international experience, and resale potential. Sarmiento, born in Spain but a full Ecuador international, fit the profile perfectly.

The player spent last season on loan at Burnley, making 37 appearances and scoring four goals in the Championship. His performances played an important role in the club’s promotion back to the Premier League. He remains under contract with Brighton, who had loaned him out to gain more game time and development.

Itatiaia report that Cruzeiro’s interest quickly evolved into advanced negotiations last night. The Brazilian side reached a full agreement with Brighton for a permanent transfer, and had also finalised personal terms with Sarmiento. At one point, the move was seen as practically done behind the scenes.

However, journalists Samuel Venâncio and Leonardo Gimenez later revealed that the player ultimately decided against returning to South America at this stage of his career. He informed Cruzeiro that he intends to remain in Europe, leading to the collapse of the transfer despite all terms being agreed.

While Cruzeiro will now look elsewhere, the failed deal reflects their clear recruitment strategy: targeting young international talent with long-term value.
