Bruno Guimaraes issues reality check to Newcastle United after Celtic humiliation, he is spot on

Bruno Guimaraes is the voice of reason after Newcastle United’s heavy defeat to Celtic on Saturday.

The Magpies’ pre-season got off to the worst possible start north of the border. Newcastle lost 4-0 against Celtic, with 10,000 travelling Geordies forced to watch what was an incredibly worrying performance.

Newcastle United were blown away by Brendan Rodgers’ side, who are much more ready for the start of the 2025/26 season. So they should be, with Celtic’s competitive campaign due to begin in less than two weeks.

As for Eddie Howe and his side, this really is just the start of their pre-season journey.

Bruno Guimaraes’ message after Newcastle United lose against Celtic

That is a fact that Bruno Guimaraes has attempted to reinforce in the wake of Newcastle’s 4-0 loss on Saturday.

Following Newcastle’s defeat to Celtic, the Toon captain took to his official Instagram account to send a message to supporters.

Bruno wrote: “5 days of training and still a lot to improve as a team for a great season! Happy to be back. Very motivated to have the best season possible.”

As Bruno says, there is clearly a lot for Newcastle to improve on.

But perspective is needed. After all, the entire Newcastle United group had only been back together for five days.

Pre-season is not about results. It is about preparing for the upcoming campaign. While Howe would have hoped for a better performance, he may have learned more about his team in defeat.

Bruno Guimaraes performed very well for Newcastle after changing position

While there was not much for the Toon Army to celebrate on Saturday, Bruno’s performance was certainly a positive.

The 27-year-old was probably the Magpies’ best player, having reverted back to the position that now belongs to Sandro Tonali.

With the Italy international starting on the bench, Bruno was deployed as Newcastle’s number six. He played in the middle of the midfield three, aiming to press Celtic high and force mistakes.

Bruno was at it from the first minute, and it might have been a different result had all of his teammates matched his intensity.

It is a positive start to pre-season for the Brazilian, who is keen to have ‘the best season possible’.
