Sheffield Wednesday fans may have been distraught to lose Djeidi Gassama last week, but he’s not made the best start upon his arrival at Rangers.
With the Owls under immense financial pressure, difficult decisions have been made and Djeidi Gassama was sacrificed in order to help pay the wages of his former teammates.
Wednesday fans branded the move a disgrace, largely because they felt the £2.2m fee was nowhere near the player’s actual value.
They’re right to be gutted over losing one of their best players, but for Gassama himself, he’s already having to dig himself out of a sticky situation North of the border.
Djeidi Gassama makes massive Rangers blunder
As per Alan Nixon on Patreon, it sounds like Gassama actually made the worst first impression he could possibly make at Rangers.
Apparently, Gassama turned up to negotiations with Rangers wearing a Boston Celtics jersey, not realising that he was likely to rile up his new club with the reference to their fierce Glasgow rivals.
Gassama was already wearing the basketball attire when he was training with Sheffield Wednesday at St. George’s Park and reportedly had no time to change before holding talks with Rangers chiefs.
An innocent mistake it may be, but he will want to put this behind him as soon as possible. One thing’s for sure, Gassama will not be wearing anything green again in a hurry.

Djeidi Gassama can take the SPL by storm
Last season, Gassama registered eight goals and one assist in 47 games for the Owls. Given the relative difficulty level in Scotland’s top tier is arguably slightly lower than the Championship, the young winger will surely relish topping up that tally in 2025/26.
Interestingly, Gassama clocked an xG of just 6.0 last season, so he outperformed his expectation levels in that regard. He also registered 3.03 shot-creating actions per 90, which suggests he will be carving out plenty of opportunities in the coming campaign.

Owls legend Barry Bannan did warn Rangers they may be frustrated by Gassama, insisting patience will be required. However, he also highlighted the fact the youngster has ‘serious potential’ who will go on to become a ‘very good signing’ for the Scottish giants.
