Real Madrid star Rodrygo Goes has opened up about the biggest decision of his career — revealing that he was one step away from signing for Barcelona before following his heart to the Santiago Bernabéu.
In an emotional interview ahead of El Clásico, the Brazilian winger admitted that his future could have looked very different:
“Before I signed for Real Madrid, everything was almost done with Barça. But when my father asked me to choose, the decision was easy. I knew what I wanted. I knew what my dream was: Madrid.”
Now a cornerstone of Carlo Ancelotti’s attack and a fan favourite among the Madrid faithful, Rodrygo reaffirmed his loyalty to Los Blancos with a statement that will delight supporters:
“My future? I will stay at Real Madrid until they no longer want me here.”
The Xabi Alonso Connection
Rodrygo also revealed details of his growing relationship with new head coach Xabi Alonso, highlighting the mutual respect between player and manager.
“Xabi told me: ‘I know you like to play on the left, but I’ll also need you in other positions.’ I told him I don’t mind — I’ll play wherever he wants. I’m here to help the team.”
The 24-year-old forward’s maturity and selflessness continue to stand out in a squad filled with world-class talent.
Focused on Team, Not Trophies
Despite growing calls for him to be in future Ballon d’Or conversations, Rodrygo insists individual accolades aren’t his priority.
“I’m not thinking about the Ballon d’Or right now. If I could vote, I’d have voted for Dembélé this year.”
Eyes on El Clásico
With the season’s first El Clásico just around the corner, Rodrygo made it clear that Real Madrid are coming for revenge after last season’s painful loss to Barcelona.
“We have to beat Barça! Last season was horrible for us, and that can’t happen again. At the Bernabéu, we must show who we are.”
Driven by passion, loyalty, and the dream that began in white, Rodrygo stands ready to lead Real Madrid into one of the biggest matches of the season — and to prove once again that his heart has always belonged to Madrid.
