Who is Jaydee Canvot? Meet the 18-year-old ‘top prospect’ who Unai Emery wants at Aston Villa

Aston Villa can already boast a number of top talents.

Unai Emery has the likes of Ian Maatsen, Morgan Rogers, Amadou Onana and Jacob Ramsey in his squad at Villa Park – who contribute to a nice mix of seniority and youthfulness at Aston Villa with John McGinn, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins also present.

Now, Aston Villa are looking to bring another gem to the Midlands in Jaydee Canvot – but who is he?

Aston Villa could sign a real diamond in Jaydee Canvot

David Ornstein of The Athletic now claims that Aston Villa have just made a bid for the 18-year-old, who is described as a ‘top prospect’ within the report.

Unfortunately for the Villans, the offer – which remains undisclosed – has been rejected by Toulouse, but a deal remains possible as talks continue.

Should an agreement be found, Aston Villa fans would have plenty of reasons to get excited.

For one, Canvot is not only a precocious central defender, but he can also operate as a holding midfielder.

The teenager has previously spoken about his versatility, saying: “Indeed, I’m lucky to be versatile, being able to play in two different positions… even if he (Carles Martínez Novell – manager of Toulouse) decides to put me as a right-back, I’ll play too!”

Canvot, who can impressively boast 18 appearances in Ligue 1 already, is hardly shy either – he even led a chant in front of the Toulouse supporters.

Furthermore, data site FBREF add that Canvot is comparable to some standout senior players, such as Marseille captain Leonardo Balerdi (26) and Emmanuel Agbadou (28) – who moved to Midlands rivals Wolves for £17m back in January.

It speaks volumes that Canvot is already similar to these players statistically at the age of just 18.

The fact he is a product of Toulouse also bodes well. The Ligue 1 side have previously produced the likes of Fabien Barthez, Moussa Sissoko, Etienne Capoue, Jean-Clair Todibo, Issa Diop, Manu Kone and Amine Adli, so those heading up the academy seem to know what they are doing.

Unai Emery has already signed another precocious centre-back who could partner Jaydee Canvot one day

Emery already has a standout centre-back pairing in Ezri Konsa, who Liverpool like, and Pau Torres, although the Spaniard seemingly has eyes on lining up heirs to the throne.

Not only is Canvot being targeted, but Aston Villa have already signed Yasin Ozcan from Kasimpasa in a £5.8m deal.

TBR Football understand Villa Park insiders believe Ozcan can be a long-term replacement for Torres in the heart of defence.

Should Aston Villa seal a deal for Canvot, the future of the defence would certainly look very healthy indeed.
