‘Like fish on a hook’ – Dismay in Rome as Aston Villa tear team apart

If Aston Villa fans were feeling a little down after a slow summer so far, then the 4-0 win over AS Roma on Wednesday should have lightened the spirits.

And if it did, then the reaction to the result in Rome should make for fun reading too with Corriere della Sera covering the game today.

Corriere kick things off by explaining that Roma suffered a ‘thrashing’ against Aston Villa, collapsing after just 17 minutes and losing 4-0.

They say it was a poor evening for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who fell apart against the toughest opponents they’ve faced this summer.

While there are some matters that need to be considered, such as Aston Villa being further along in their preparations and Roma having trained on the morning of the game, there is still no denying that Unai Emery’s side strolled past the Italian side.

Corriere say their defence was like ‘a horror show’ while Artem Dovbyk was transparent. They couldn’t even get excited about new signing Wesley, who was out of step, under-researched and ‘inaccurate’.

They say praise has to be given to Aston Villa, who baited Roma ‘like a fish on a hook’ and showed ‘great mastery’ in the way that they played. All in all, it was a miserable performance, and one which has caused plenty of dismay.
