Alexander Isak has informed Newcastle United he wants to leave the club, according to multiple sources cited by The Athletic, and Liverpool is about to submit their first formal offer to sign the Sweden international off NUFC.
The 25-year-old striker requested not to join the squad for their Asia pre-season tour and is now the subject of renewed transfer speculation.
Newcastle stated the absence was due to a minor thigh injury, but sources indicate Isak asked to be omitted while his future remains unresolved.
“Alexander Isak wants to leave Newcastle United,” The Athletic reported. “His absence was a preference of the 25-year-old striker.”
Liverpool made an informal approach for Isak earlier this summer and are believed to remain interested despite signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million. The Merseyside club had previously explored a £120 million deal for Isak, and they are set to enter formal talks with Newcastle and submit a first “official” offer for the striker.
“He’s regarded within Anfield as a surefire option,” The Athletic reported, noting Isak’s proven Premier League output as the main appealing trait to the Reds already on Isak’s profile.
Last season, Isak scored 27 goals in all competitions and ranked second behind Mohamed Salah in Premier League scoring with 23 goals.
Newcastle remain firm that Isak is not for sale, but value him at £150 million. If Liverpool reignites talks, as expected, a transfer should take a British record fee to complete the deal.
Despite his contract running until 2028, Isak has not agreed to new terms. Sources suggest Isak is being advised by agent Vlado Lemic and may press further for an exit.
Newcastle are already exploring replacements, including a potential transfer for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
