Manchester United could potentially ensure that Newcastle United’s transfer struggles continue.

It is proving to be a frustrating summer for Newcastle United, with Anthony Elanga the only player to arrive. Key targets have moved elsewhere, with Hugo Ekitike set to sign for Liverpool.

He appears to be the latest player that Eddie Howe is missing out on, but that could swiftly change. James Trafford to Manchester City is being heavily rumoured, despite the Magpies chasing him for more than 12 months.

Newcastle United face competition to sign Benjamin Sesko

In attack, Newcastle are linked with Benjamin Sesko. He would be a blockbuster arrival on Tyneside, and would certainly make up for missing out on Ekitike.

However, the Magpies face competition from the Slovenia international.

That is according to Ben Jacobs, who has posted on X that Manchester United have got Sesko on their radar as they aim to sign a striker next.

The RB Leipzig forward is one of several players that Ruben Amorim is looking at, as he gets set to add Bryan Mbeumo to his Manchester United squad.

The players Newcastle United have missed out on to Manchester United this summer

If Sesko does move to Old Trafford, he will become the third summer target that Newcastle United have missed out on to the Red Devils.

Bryan Mbeumo

Man United are set to sign Mbeumo from Brentford for £71million. He had been a top target for Eddie Howe, only for Newcastle to decide Mbeumo was too expensive.

That has proven to be the correct decision, with the Magpies walking away at the right time. It has developed into quite the saga, with Man United still set to pay a premium for Mbeumo despite such a lengthy negotiation process.

Newcastle bought Elanga instead, and will be happy with their decision. The 23-year-old looks perfectly suited to Howe’s side, becoming one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever at £55million.

Matheus Cunha

The other player who Man United have landed ahead of Newcastle this summer is Matheus Cunha.

This was not the biggest of blows for the Magpies, as it was pretty clear early on that the Brazilian was only interested in moving to Old Trafford.

Newcastle never had a chance with Cunha, who has been given the number 10 shirt at Man United. That previously belonged to Marcus Rashford.

But Cunha is another player who would have improved the Newcastle United squad, yet he is another target who has moved elsewhere. That has been a recurring theme for the Magpies this summer, as pressure continues to build.
