Newcastle Willing to Pay £61m to Sign ‘Exceptional’ Star

Newcastle are showing strong interest in a surprise summer move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oihan Sancet, Spanish publication Fichajes has claimed.

The Magpies are believed to have set their sights on signing the talented Spanish playmaker before the transfer window closes, though the pursuit is currently considered difficult.

A deal for Sancet would likely only materialise if Alexander Isak departs – the Sweden international’s exit would create financial flexibility and open up an opportunity to target the Bilbao star.

Sancet, who is under contract with the Basque club until June 2032, is believed to have a release clause worth €80m (£69m).

According to Fichajes, Newcastle would be willing to splash out €70m (£61m) on Sancet this summer, provided they have sufficient funds available.

Bilbao are in a strong negotiating position, as the ‘exceptional’ 25-year-old is tied to a long-term contract and the club have no intention of selling unless ‘very favourable’ terms are proposed.

Sancet is said to be aware of the interest from England but has yet to express a desire for a new challenge, having played for Bilbao’s senior side since the 2019/20 season.

He recently impressed against Premier League opposition, scoring in Bilbao’s 3-2 friendly defeat to Liverpool on Monday.

Newcastle are anticipating a busy end to the summer transfer window and are expected to sign a new number nine to strengthen Eddie Howe’s attacking options.
