West Ham United have told left-back Emerson that he can depart the club this summer, according to Sami Mokbel of the BBC.
Last season was a disappointing one for West Ham. Ahead of the campaign, manager Julen Lopetegui was given heavy financial backing, with numerous additions made to his first-team squad. Despite this, the Spaniard never managed to find any consistency with his players and was ultimately sacked in January.
Graham Potter, formerly of Chelsea and Brighton, was drafted in as his replacement and saw out a relatively indifferent season. The Hammers finished well within the confines of mid-table, never threatening to lift any higher in the table. Now, Potter is in the middle of his first pre-season and transfer window.
West Ham have already been active in the transfer department, signing Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf to strengthen their options at right-back and left-back respectively. Those arrivals, particularly the latter, have perhaps contributed to West Ham’s decision to let one specific player depart.
Emerson to Leave West Ham
Full-back is ‘surplus to requirements’
Sami Mokbel has reported that Emerson, who earns £95,000 per week, is “nursing a minor back injury,” meaning he has not travelled with the West Ham squad for pre-season. The Italy international, however, has also been told that he can depart the club this summer having, until now, been a regular starter since joining them from Chelsea in 2022.
| Emerson 24/25 Season Stats | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes Played |
| Premier League | 31 | 2 | 1 | 2,125′ |
| League Cup | 1 | 0 | 0 | 16′ |
Emerson, who started for the Hammers as they won the 2023 Conference League final, is still in his early 30s and in theory, could remain within a high level of football for some time yet. What appears apparent, however, is that this time will not be spent at the London Stadium.
